要約
Abstract
Sugars, such as glucose and fructose, can react non-enzymatically with the amino groups of proteins, lipids and nucleic acids to form senescent macromolecules, termed advanced glycation end products (AGEs). There is accumulating evidence that formation and accumulation of AGEs have progressed in a normal aging process and diabetic conditions, thereby being involved in numerous aging-related disorders, including cardiovascular disease, cancer growth and metastasis, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer’s disease. Recently, tissue accumulation levels of AGEs can be non-invasively measured by skin autofluorescence (SAF). In this review, we briefly discuss the clinical utility and pitfalls in non-invasively evaluating tissue AGE levels by SAF.
